Family Instinct, directed by Andris Gauja, centers on Zanda, a young woman involved in an incestuous relationship with her brother, who is currently in prison. It takes place on the outskirts of a Latvian village. Zanda tries to raise her children and pay rent under extreme poverty in an inhospitable climate of alcoholism and violence. The film is perhaps strangely billed as a tragi-comedy, but as anyone who has grown up with addiction or abuse can attest, there is little to laugh at. A powerful and raw film that is sometimes difficult to watch – not for the faint of heart. Check out the site here for more info on the film, and scroll below for the trailer.
